OFFICIAL: Unai Emery Returns To The Premier League With Aston Villa As New Boss Following The Sack Of Steven Gerrard.

Aston Villa have announced the appointment of Unai Emery as the club's new Head Coach.

The Premier League club made the official announcement via their website, with the deal considered to be a long-term project (next four seasons, with an option for an additional year).

He reportedly will earn a salary of more than seven million euros per season.

Emery leaves Spanish club side Villarreal, after Aston Villa activated his €6 million release clause to bring the former Arsenal manager back to the Premier League.

The Spaniard had a spell as Arsenal manager from 2018 to 2019, but now replaces Steven Gerrard, who was sacked last week after 11 months at the Villa Park following his move from Rangers, where he led the side to their first Scottish league title in 10 years.

Gerrard was unable to replicate that success with Villa, winning just 13 of his 40 matches in charge before the former Liverpool and England captain was eventually sacked immediately after Villa's disappointing 3-0 defeat at Fulham midweek.

Aaron Danks took over the job on a caretaker basis and inspired Villa to a 4-0 win over Brentford last weekend to record their first win in five matches.

Emery joined Villarreal in 2020 and led the club to Europa League glory at the expense of Man United at the end of his first season. He also led the team to the Champions League semi-finals for just the second time in their history.

The 50-year-old will hold a farewell press conference with Villarreal on Tuesday.

After being sacked by the Gunners three years ago, he recently turned down a return to England last year when he was approached by Newcastle United.

Prior to moving to the Premier League, Emery had been in charge of Paris Saint-Germain where he won Ligue 1 title, as well as two French Cups and two French League Cups. He also won three Europa Leagues with Sevilla which, combined with the fourth he won with Villarreal, makes him the most successful manager in the history of the competition.

Emery will begin his new role on November 1 after his work permit formalities are completed, meaning his first match in charge will be at home to Manchester United on Sunday, November 6.

Caretaker boss Danks would remain in charge for Saturday's trip to Newcastle, with Emery arriving three days later.
