Despite the result, Real Madrid still sit top of Champions League Group F and have already qualified for the knock out stages, but they will have to play to go through as group winners on the final matchday, which sees them take on Celtic at the Santiago Bernabรฉu (Wednesday, 2 November, 2022).

Manager Carlo Ancelotti speaking after the defeat said; “You learn more from one defeat than ten wins in a row.

“I'm not angry, it's a defeat. It bothers us but we have another chance to be first.

“I can’t criticize a team that has done so well, so far. We didn’t play the way we wanted to."

In other match centres on the night, Chelsea traveled to Austrian to play RB Salzburg in an early fixture.

Graham Potter's side were in search of three points to secure their qualification to the last 16.

The West London club demonstrated their intentions to the host in the 23rd minute after a confused defence from Salzburg served Mateo Kovacic with the time and space to wallop the ball into the net from the edge of the goal area.

It was the midfielder’s first goal since January 2 and it came in the country of his birth.

However, Salzburg, levelled the scoreline in the 48th minute after Junior Adamu jabbed home the equalizer.

The Nigerian-born 21-year-old's goal brought excitement to the home fans with his 10th goal of the season.

But the Austrian side were unable to contain the determination and talent of the Blues attack, as Kai Havertz eventually scored the winning goal to secure a vital 2-1 victory for Chelsea.

The triumph means Chelsea have secured the 10-point threshold required to qualify for the round of 16 with one game to spare.

Juventus crashed out of the competition after a disappointing 4-3 loss to Benfica in Portugal.

Benfica had to hold off a late fightback from Juventus and extend their unbeaten start to the season to 20 games in all competitions (17 wins, and 3 draws).

The result ensures they have qualified for the last 16 for the second season in a row - at the expense of their Italian opponents.

They finish top alongside PSG in Group H with 11 points, and PSG need a win and ideally a few goals to keep their noses in front of Benfica in same group.

It's the first time since 2013 (nine-years) that Juventus have failed to advance from the group stage.
