Man United Emerge Favorites To Win The Carabao Cup After Man City's Elimination.

Manchester United are now the heavy favourites to lift the 2022/23 Carabao Cup, also known as the EFL Cup after rivals Man City's got eliminated from the competition.

Man City put in an under-par display as they lost to Southampton 2-0 at St. Mary's Stadium on Wednesday night, which is the biggest shock of the quarter-final games.

Despite the introduction of key players like Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne who were summoned from the bench, they could not still stage a fightback for the Cityzens.

The Saints had only four shots on target two of which landed at the back of the net, with Sekou Mara and Moussa Djenepo scoring the only two goals of the match in the 23rd and 28th minutes respectively.

This is the first time in history, that Pep Guardiola would lost a domestic cup quarter-final in his managerial career.

Man United had cruised past Charlton Athletic the previous night, with Marcus Rashford's brace sealing a 3-0 victory after a wonderful Antony strike opened the scoring. 

The Red Devil's manager Erik ten Hag bluntly admitted after the win that 'the last four is nothing, it is only about winning' as he looks to bring a first trophy to Old Trafford since 2017.

Another in-form team Newcastle also reached the semi-finals following a 2-0 win at home to Leicester City, while Nottingham Forest took the last spot by beating Wolves 4-3 on penalties after a dramatic 1-1 draw at the City Ground.

The Carabao Cup, is the first piece of silverware up for grabs this season, and the final takes place at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, February 26.

Liverpool are the current holders, winning a record ninth title. They defeated Chelsea 11–10 on penalties following a goalless draw after extra time.
