Mason Greenwood Departs Man United On A Loan Deal To Getafe Until 2024

Embattled Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has joined Spanish club side Getafe on loan until 2024.

United confirmed Greenwood would leave the club last month following an internal investigation into the allegations of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault against him. He was arrested on suspicion in January 2022, and charges in October same year.

However on a pivotal development in February 2023, all charges against him were dropped earlier this year by the CPS after "the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction".

The 21-year-old had been suspended from all Man United trainings and matches while the club completed an internal investigation after the Crown Prosecution Service discontinued its case against Greenwood.

United had previously made clear that Greenwood's path back to the game would not be at Old Trafford. They conveyed, "All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome."

Responding to the conclusion of Man United's internal probe, Greenwood stated, "I fully accept I made mistakes... and I take my share of responsibility." He has consistently maintained that he did not commit any criminal acts.

Serie A side Lazio was reportedly willing to sign Greenwood, but Di Marzio claimed that their attempts were left too late as the Italian market closed at 7.00pm and there was not enough time to complete the deal.

United now face the prospect of having to pay Greenwood as much as £8million after he saw his potential transfer to Lazio collapse on deadline day, in what would be a major financial blow, especially as the club have carefully been considering Financial Fair Play regulations while conducting their summer business.

Greenwood will now revive his career playing for Getafe in LaLiga, the top tier of Spanish football, for the rest of the season.

A statement from United read: "Mason Greenwood has signed for LaLiga side Getafe CF on a season-long loan, subject to international clearance.

"The move enables Greenwood to begin to rebuild his career away from Manchester United.

"The club will continue to offer its support to Mason and his family during this period of transition."
